This is a very funny, quick-paced, action story about a 12-year-old boy who is obsessed with becoming a detective (like the Hardy Boys mysteries). Researching a subject for social studies, Steve goes to the public library and checks out a book on the history of American quilting (not his choice, but the luck of the draw). His checkout triggers a full, onslaught chase by the "Librarians" --those who have all the knowledge. Claiming he is a spy and is committing treason, they try to catch him and get him to tell them who he works for. His love of detective stories help him to escape all the weird places he finds himself in, altho not everything goes according to plan. This is a quick read, full of action, and a lot of humor poking fun at the establishment. This would be a perfect book to book talk at the beginning of the school year to build up excitement about reading. |
