Tarra, the elephant, spent 20 years in a circus entertaining people as the world's only roller-skating elephant. She retired as the first resident in the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Tarra greeted other elephants as they arrived, but never found a special friend. One morning, she woke to find Bella, a stray dog, sleeping next to her. Although the other elephants did not normally trust dogs, Tarra and Bella became inseparable and devoted to each other. When Bella suffered a spinal cord injury, Tarra stayed by her side until she recovered - undeniably Bella's best medicine. Photos by Carol Buckley portray this unlikely friendship. She tells the story in a straightforward manner and does not try to explain the friendship. Photos depict the dramatic difference in size. There are many endearing shots of the fondness between Tarra and Bella. Author-photographer Carol Buckley is a co-founder of the Elephant Sanctuary in 1995. This could be a companion to other books of odd friendships - Owen and Mzee, a hippo and a tortoise, and Two Bobbies, a cat and dog who survived hurricane Katrina.
