I thought this would be a book of cartoon figures, but was pleasantly surprised to find it full of famous 'action' art from museums around the world. Action figures are a common theme, though they range from Andrea del Castaano's David with the Head of Goliath, to the George Bellows painting of boxers Jack Dempsey and Luis Firpo. Even one of my favorites, Children's Games, by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, is here. There is so much to see in this picture that one can only wonder at the detail. The art work is given full-page representations, the color is beautiful, and the captions are quite enough as the pictures speak for themselves. Two pages of Fun Facts about the paintings point out not-to-be-missed details. This book will be a popular addition to school libraries. It certainly lives up to the subtitle, Paintings of Fun, Daring, and Adventure. |
