This well-organized, visually appealing book about the monarchs of England was a quick, fun read. It starts with a timeline which provides a good frame of reference. Then it breaks down the Kings and Queens by houses/families. There is a picture or photograph of each monarch, as well as a timeline of significant events along the bottom of the pages written about each ruler. The sidebars are coded with a symbol, so you can find specific information about architecture, government, famous battles, religion, art, literature and more during the reign of each ruler. Historically significant events, such as the Civil War, signing of the Magna Carta, the rebellion of the colonists, each get a two page spread. I always tell my students that reading about British royalty is better than watching a soap opera, and the interesting tidbits of information prove me right. |
