This excellent book chronicles the working life of an arctic whale scientist. John Craighead George, son of Jean who wrote Julie of the Wolves, lives and works in Barrow, Alaska so he can study bowhead whales year round. He gathers data from each whale harvested by the native Inupiat hunters. He also gathers anecdotal information from the hunters about whaling in the past to help him understand whale behavior. Each page is illustrated with full color photographs of people, whales, arctic landscapes, the hunt and scientific work. This is a fine introduction to scientific work and how it is accomplished. Includes glossary, books of interest, websites of interest, and index. Highly recommended for career and science collections. |
