This is a good basic biography of Alexander, beginning with his childhood and ending with his death in Babylon. The book is appealing; there are loads of pictures, photos of statues, art and coins, maps, etc. The authors quotes known historians frequently, while admitting that most of them wrote about Alexander many, many years after his death. The sidebars are interesting as well as helpful, as are the timeline, list of essential facts and further resources at the back. (I never knew that Mardians captured his horse and held it for ransom. Not a wise move; Alexander threatened to kill all of their women and children if he didn't get his horse back unharmed.) |
