This folk/fairy tale tells the story of a chipped blue willow china plate, which was damaged on a picnic years earlier. A small boy is playing in the woods and finds a beautiful, exotic "blue" girl playing in the woods. She informs him that she is lost and can't find her home, which she desperately misses. The kind boys offers to help her find her place, but asks her to describe her home so that he may help her in locating it. She describes different aspects of the blue willow pattern's scenery, complete with willow trees, blossoms, bridge, brook, a garden and her father. The story is compelling greatly due to the beautiful illustrations which are intricate and detailed, with each page full of lovely artwork which mirrors the descriptive language used in the telling of the story. In the end, the boy brings her home to his grandmother who is delighted to have "the blue girl" back and glues her back onto the broken plate, where she looks contented, and "at home" once again. Recommended for an elementary library.
